Chris Heaven interview on italian Magazine Metal Hammer n.7/2003 by Fabio Magliano

Between the many young and ambitious bands, there's a musician that had written important pages of the italian hard-rock with his Redlynx, band from Turin that in 90's made 3 good albums and 3 EP that was appreciated expecially in Japan. CHRIS HEAVEN (www.chris-heaven.com) after a some lucky solo projects and with other good bands like Chris Falco's Demon Angels and Edge Of Time, with Michael Von Knorring, seems ready now for a clamorous Redlynx reunion.

Well Chris, why come back with Redlynx?
"'cause seems that somethings moving in the italian hard-rock scene, after a not lucky period of time.
All the big bands of '80s and '90s are disappeared, Gow, Elektradrive, Nasty Licks, Cry Baby, till my Redlynx, down the hit of power-metal and in Turin surviving only some good bands like Chris Falco's Demon Angels and Hollywood Killerz. I had never stop to sing and now I feel is the right time for get out Redlynx from the freezer."

In these days you made some important collaborations...

"Yes, first the one for the Jason Becker tribute. I had the pleasure to collaborate with Michael Von Knorring (Malmsteen), Mats Olausson (Ark/Malmsteen) and Tracy G (Dio). On the cd there's monsters like Steve Vai and Marty Friedman. It's rewarding work with these kind of people."

This tribute is not the only project that you made in these days...

"
Till some weeks ago I worked on "The Fallen king" my new solo cd. It's an hard-rock cd with some neoclassic stuff (like "Odissey" or "Eclipse" of Malmsteen). There's special guests like Michael Von Knorring, Noriyuki Yoshida, Michael Gapys, Yasu and many others that now I cannot reveal. But the cd will be done after the soummer. Now I need to sing rock and that's why I think to give to Redlynx another opportunity (with the "Get a Life!" line-up). I can sing different kind of music but I'm a rocker and that's what I can do better.
In the meantime, after the Jason Becker Tribute, a tribute to Warrant, a tribute to '80s ballad, one Japan tribute to Malmsteen now I'm recording a rock version of a George Michael pop song".

Which are the singers that give you the ispiration?
"For many years David Coverdale was my ispiration. I had learn from him the interpretation, also to breath in the songs. Now I listen many other singers like Mark Boals, Joe Lynn Turner, Jorn Lande and out of rock I love George Michael voice".

Chris, a final message...
"Don't let rock die! Let's play music, don't surrend yourself... remember what Goethe said.."Who doesn't love music don't deserve to be called man...who loves music is half man...who plays music it's a complete man".
Fabio Magliano.

VARIOUS ARTISTS 'A TRIBUTE TO JASON BECKER PART TWO'
(LION MUSIC/BERTUS)

Last year a Jason Becker tribute CD was released and back then already plans were made for a follow-up, and now LION MUSIC has released the 2nd CD of the tribute to the legendary guitarist JASON BECKER. Again a lot of well-known musicians are involved, such as STEVE VAI, TOMMY DENANDER, MARTY FRIEDMAN, SLAV SIMANIC, JK NORTHRUP, LARS ERIC MATTSSON and many others. The CD is a double CD set with a total of 27 tracks. Almost all the songs are instrumental of course, with such highlights like “Colors”, “Temple of the absurd”, “Temple in the cellar”, “Utopia”, “I.M.N.U.”, “Speed Metal Symphony” and “Peace of mind part 1”. However, my favourite tracks are 2 songs with lead vocals, namely opener “Desert island” (lovely 80s melodic rock a la MALMSTEEN, RAINBOW, with very good lead vocals by Norwegian singer Geir Ronning) and “Lady luck” (midtempo melodic rocker with great vocals by Chris heaven). If you purchased part one, then you must also buy this 2nd Tribute CD. Together with the BOSTON tribute, this JASON BECKER tribute belong to the best tributes ever done!

[...]Second song is from Edge Of Time, easy work for them, Michael Von Knorring was a Malmsteen drummer on the album "Eclipse". Here they play a song from "Odissey", the great "Crystal Ball", with Heaven that wear perfectly the Joe Lynn Turner clothes, a good Alex Argento on keyboards that fit perfectly the tunes of Johannson and a great Noriyuki Yoshida on guitar. Very good production for a band that sound really near to the original.Again Chris Heaven on "Dreaming" (again from Odissey) with the keyboard-player Simone Bresciani in a strange version with a Queen arrangment and without a guitar. I love this version maybe more than the original but I think Yngwie will not like it ehhe.

[...]Second song start the italian side with Chris Heaven that sing a cover of "The Only One" from "Magnum Opus". The song is well recorded and the musicians that played are good, right drums, powerfull bass, very fit keyboards, very hard-rock guitar...that's the problem. The song is really a bit too hard-rock and less Malmsteen, but I think that Heaven choosed this song for sing between Coverdale and Jorn and less in neoclassic style. Anyway a very good song with a great Heaven in a very good vocal performance.hhe.

C
hris Heaven's RedLynx is back with a new album and line-up ready to take off
(and kick ass)...furnished with a brilliant vocal performance by Chris,
reminding us firmly of Coverdale's golden years and proving himself ready and
able to take him on.."Bloody Heart" shows us an immense vocal work, climbing up
notes and crossing the boarder in to "Zeppelin-land" (or to be more specific
Coverdale/Page-land), especially in the tasteful choruses that are echoed in "I
am in love again". "Only Tomorrow" is the CD's masterpiece. The orchestration
releases a loving feeling and is really moving, with further dramatic moments
between Chris and guest vocalist Simona Sobara (great job!). To round it off, an
a-cappella version of "In A Dream" by Badlands dedicated to the late Cozy
Powell: congratulations are a must for the long held note at the end, we're sure
Cozy would have appreciated it.

tell this version from the original, this is thanks to Chris Heaven's ever
warmer vocals [...] Many compliments to Chris and the band who keep on
supporting the Italian Hard Rock scene whole-heartedly - its a final blow for
those who think it can't be done. Another giant step forward for the Red Lynx

"You can't go wrong: as always its eighties hard rock, wild guitars, dreamy
keyboards and an overflow of melody, all this conducted masterly by founder
member Chris Heaven and his passionately warm bluesy vocals. This, and much
more, is what you get from "Looking for your heart", RedLynx's third CD...with
all those screamed "baby, baby"s and "uuuuhhhh", reminding us of a wonderful
distant shivery past..."Only you in my life" is a slow ballad where Chris forces
himself beyond the Coverdale vocal range (but when in the middle and bass
registers the influence of Whitesnake continues to inflict a powerful bite"

"Redlynx have released a fantastic 4 track EP, with a dirty/melodic rock sound
that immediatley finds its zenith in the energetic opener "Wasted Innocence" in
which Chris Heaven stands out for his trademark rough and ready vocals [...],
one of the very few hard rock bands still in great shape...

(METAL SHOCKabout THE STONE GROOVE EP 2000)

Redlynx and its charismatic singer Chris Heaven are back and making waves, but
above all they're back and making music, playing that good ol' bluesy hard rock
that gave them great success both in the media and on the road during the 90s.
Whilst we wait for the new album they've released an EP, showing the band in
great form, enriched by great musical touches and only limited by a sub-standard
recording which ends up punishing Chris' excellent vocals. Nevertheless its
impossible to not enjoy the sheer dynamism of "Wasted Innocence", the AOR of
"Kiss of Fairy" and, finally, the EP's real gem "I wanna make love to you
(again)", an emotional duet with Elio Maugeri (ex-Elektradrive).its good for
starters, you really couldn't ask for more.

(METAL HAMMER about THE STONE GROOVE EP 2000)

They played tipically '80s hard-rock with some blues influences. And in this solo cd, Heaven have more blues influences. His admiration for David Coverdale is enough for play a cd that seems that continues "Restless Heart" and "Into The Light" but with a personal touch. "Lovetracker" its the first song, powerfully and strenght more Joe Lynn Turner oriented ."A Sad Sad Day" was wrirren for the tragedy of NYC, it's very evocative the middle part with lyrics from Nostradamus.
"She's Called Trouble" it's a cacthy Funky-rock that show the rough an' aggressive voice of Heaven.  "Bloody Heart" it's a remake from old Redlynx album "Tongue-Tied" (this is the Coverdale-disease...play remake of old songs with new look) with a great piano of Simone Bresciani (from Elektradrive). "Victim Of Love" it's really a gem. It start with an angelic chorus of Simona Sorbara and an interpretation in low range of Heaven that sometimes make me think that he is "Daddy" Coverdale. Short song, really impressive...beautiful. "Grey-Black Rainbow" it's a Deep Purple style song and that's why you can find Sergio Gualtieri of Fireball  that sing the bridge in Glenn Hughes style remind us the feeling of "Stormbringer" and "Burn".
"Virtual Lover" start as a remake of "Stairway To Heaven" but after some seconds change style but still remain the only song that I don't like too much. "Sell the soul to the blues" it's a bit Guns n' Roses maybe for the Slash oriented guitars of Pier Della Role.
The cd is closed with "Out of the darkness...into the light", la titletrack that Heaven dedicate to his teacher Coverdale in a very strong and sufferend Intepretation that I really like, between blues guitar and harmonica. Somebody called Heaven "The voice of Italian rock", I don't know if he is the best singer in Italy, but really he have a warm bluesy oice really near to Coverdale but with an italian style. An album that really could be loved by Whitesnake and Purple fans, but it's not nu-metal or modern rock.

SPANISH REVIEW

Redlynx – “The Stone Groove EP”

Rainbow Music Records

9.5 / 10 - Pedro
